Late last year, I was contacted by Radish, a reading app for phones, asking to publish a long serialized version of my series that begins with Forever Innocent. What a wonderful tribute to your friend. I’m sorry for your loss.
John was the best.
Deanna, Thank you for posting this wonderful tribule to my dad. It was beautifully articulated and insightful. I know you meant the world to him, as well. And I’m so very grateful for making sure he go his most recent book published. That was some important unfinished business that I would have been clueless about. It took some quick and fancy footwork on your part, and brought him both relief, and joy in his final months.
Deanna, I met JR through my former husband, Frank Gerrietts, many many years ago. Time has dimmed my memory of just how they met, but they shared a mutual love of art and Mexico and it was always a pleasure when John came calling on Frank in Beaumont. The last time he and I were in touch, other than watching Facebook posts, was when Frank died. But I always felt connected through his marvelous books. I wanted to just say thanks for your remembrance, it captured JR so well and brought back some good memories and stories. I know his loss is keenly felt. Jane Schmitt.
John and I worked at Weekly Reader…me for about 20 years; he for less. He was an excellent illustrator. I left Weekly Reader in 1993. worked at some other places, and retired in 2012, then remarried in 2017 after my wife of 48 years died. I always wanted to fly out to Austin and visit with him but never got to it. We exchanged manuscripts over the years and I always considered him a close friend. I will miss him and I appreciate so much what you have written about him here. This is a fine remembrance of an excellent artist whether in skilled illustration or in brilliant, chiseled prose.
What a lovely way to remember your friend and colleague. I am truly touched.
I can’t wait to read this!
Looking forward to reading! My son & daughter-in-law in the process of adopting their foster daughter, and they have shared many of their conversations with all. She just turned 5, she has been with them since she was 3.
How lovely! It is quite a journey!
Will it be signed by LD too?
Yes, signed books will be signed by both of us.
Thanks so much, just ordered it and can’t wait to read it ♥
